Analysing Music Videos: Coldplay, 'Paradise'
Identify the conventions in Paradise and give examples of when they are used.
One convention is that the video is a narrative which means throughout the video, they are telling a story about a fake elephant who is in captivity and escapes to try and find 'paradise'. There is slow paced editing, each shot last around 4 second which makes viewers have empathy for the elephant its situation. Furthermore, (at 1.44) the shot is filmed from behind bars so the viewers can understand the elephants point of view and have empathy for it.
Which genre does Paradise conform to? List 4 conventions/iconography you spotted.
Genre: Indie/Pop rock
1.Narrative structure, not the traditional performer pop style
2. The protagonist is a human dressed up as an animal
3. Steadicam connotes realism
4. When the elephant finds 'paradise', the saturation (colours) is increased which emphasises the happiness of the elephant
Applying Todorov's narrative theory to Paradise
Equilibrium - elephant is in captivity (normal)
Disruption - the elephant is lonely and wants to leave
Recognition - the elephant escapes the zoo
Attempt to Repair - gets on a plane and flies to Africa
New Equilibrium - the elephant finds new friends in Africa
