Exam Questions

1) How can audiences access music videos?
Identify one way online, and one way offline:

Online: The artist's youtube channel

Offline: Buying and then downloading the video

2) Explain one way in which music videos use media language to appeal to target audiences.

Music videos use media language in many ways to appeal to target audiences. For example, in 'Black Magic', the singers wear trendy clothes that are admirable to their target audience which is young, teen girls. Their target audience will see that they're wearing the clothes that they like, and feel like they can relate to the band and therefore start supporting them (by listening to their music or seeing them in concert etc).

Explain one way in which music video use media language to represent the artists.

Music videos use media language in many ways to represent the artists. For example, in the music video 'Black Magic', the singers get transformed from their geeky character into popular, pretty girls. Their trendy outfits/costumes that they're seen wearing in the video not only represents each of the girls individual style but their collective love for fashion.

3)Explain how a social group is represented within a music video. Refer to the music videos you have studied to support your answer

In 'Black Magic', many social groups are represented. There is a wide range of characters from different social groups. For example, there is a clear 'geek' character. Viewers can identify this character clearly as he is wearing glasses and a shirt whilst carrying work books. This also shows how the video conforms to stereotypes in society. Another way social groups are represented in 'Black Magic' is through the way they celebrate other cultures/races other than white people. For example, the character playing the teacher is black. This is a countertype because normally in media texts, black people would only be seen negatively. Black people stereotypically leave school early and are uneducated. So audiences from a similar background might start supporting the band for their inclusivity in their videos. Lastly, in 'Somebody to you', many social groups are not included. There are many girls who are all skinny and wearing small bikinis.  Their target audience is mostly young teen girls, which could be seen as a bad thing as they may think they only way to be successful and get attention from boys is to be skinny and act promiscuously.
