♡ MOJO Representations ♡
Stereotype
- articles: the language is formal which is a stereotype as the target audience is a higher class, which assumes they all speak very formally
- assuming the rock genre is mostly for men therefore mostly only feature pictures of men and article about men
- Countertype: some covers promote lgbt (Elton John for example)which is a countertype because the artists in the rock genre are often straight
- Countertype: females in a rock magazine - reflects that not all females are sensitive and listen to pop music.
LGBT
- Most of the time it is straight artist that are on the front cover or featured inside. This reflects how the majority or artists in the rock genre are straight.
- However MOJO has featured some lgbt artists (like Elton John) which reflects how society is more accepting of other sexualities
- There is no particular sexuality promoted as readers care mostly about the music and don't pay attention to sexuality
Gender roles
- There are way more men that women. There is sometimes a women on the front cover by they are mostly in a small box in a corner
- They may include them in a small box so that they don't alienate them completely from the magazines
- This is different to regular media as they are very often sexualised in modern media texts
- This does not reflect modern society because women are seen as being equal to men and deserve the same rights
Celebrity
- Unlike the pop genre, rock music is more about the actual music rather than the look
- This is reflected in MOJO as most articles are about the music rather than how the musicians look
- There is often a close up of the musicians on the front cover so that the audience can recognise them for who they are and their music, and not what type of clothes they're wearing or how they're standing
Multiculturalism
- People of culture are featured however there is only a very small percentage of them
- The majority of people are white; this reflects how the rock genre is mostly ran by white (males)
- However it doesn't reflect society because society treats people of different cultures equally
An excellent blog post - you've covered the different representations well.
